Margaret in plea for life - her own

She feels abandoned and needs help

- Stephen Houston

A desperate woman is begging to be looked after somewhere safe.

Neighbours of Margaret Lewis contacted the Ayrshire Post fearing at her vulnerability.

The 62- year- old has multiple health issues yet has no personal carers.

She claims social workers no longer visit and she is “terrified” in her flat after two break- ins, three window eggings and one neighbour with an ASBO who plays loud music till 4am.

In January she is due to be decanted from the ground floor flat in Donald Crescent, Troon, while it is re- wired and a new kitchen installed by South Ayrshire Council.

But she said: “I don’t know yet where I am being decanted to, but I don’t want to come back here.

“I really don’t know what to do anymore. I feel as if I am being flung from pillar to post.”

The former machinist at the Falmers jean factory in Cumnock is surrounded by medication in her home, to the point it resembles Boots.

She has heart failure and has had two arrests, renal issues, is diabetic, has polymyalgia, asthma, the lung condition COPD, has had two toes severed, has had a blood clot and celulitis in both legs and takes mini- strokes.

Margaret added: “They actually asked me to lift the laminate flooring before they decant me.

“I struggle to get up and use the electric wheelchair.

“When I went with my sister to get my hair cut yesterday I fell flat on my ramp and hit my head.”

At the moment she is struggling with the celulitis in her left leg as it seems uncontrolable.

In the past she has had 17 hours a week personal care but that was cut because her son Steven, 42, has come to live with her.

Steven has disabilities and has a doctor’s letter saying he is unable to look after his mum.

Margaret added: “I just want somewhere safe that has been adapted for disabled use.

“I feel terrified in here and I do think social work have let me down.”

Four years ago we revealed a firestarter had firebombed her mobility scooter sitting outside her flat across town in Cavendish Place.

She was moved out of there because the council said a ramp could not be built because a gas box was in the way.

A ramp has since been built at that flat and the gas box moved.

David Burns, South Ayrshire Council’s Head of Housing and Facilities said: “We’ve been working closely with our tenant, and with partner agencies, to discuss housing needs and hope to resolve any outstanding issues.

“An y o n e c o n s i d e r i n g transferring from a council house can make an application to move, although this will not guarantee that places will become immediately available.

“We’d urge anyone with specific issues to raise them with South Ayrshire Council as soon as possible and we’ll review all available options at the earliest opportunity.”
