Life was a beach for our stalwart George

Tributes paid to prom battler who got action

- Stuart Wilson

Tributes have been paid to a Prestwick stalwart who passed away walking his beloved beach. George Gemmell was 73. His death follows a seven year campaign for change at the shore, with George at the forefront of the cleanup bid.

It was an effort that would see him honoured by community chiefs for his bid to have South Ayrshire Council take action.

George, known to his family as Cameron, suffered a heart attack while enjoying his daily walk along the newlook sand, for which he had fought so hard.

Wife Liz said this week: “In many ways it is comforting that he saw the work started at the beach.

“That place became such a passion of his over the years, and he was determined to see it through.

“It started out of concern for his grandchildren – the thought of them being hurt by bricks lying on the shore really upset him.

“He always needed a project and the beach became that project. He was thrilled when the council started their work.”

George, whose attention to detail was renowned among colleagues on Prestwick North Community Council, is credited with delivering change on the beach.

And the former plant engineer was regularly spotted overseeing the cleanup work which began in earnest during the autumn.

Along with fellow campaigner, Laura Twaddell, the pair relentlessly kept pressure on officials to take action.

Sadly, Laura also passed away earlier this year.

Liz said: “The two of them worked away for years and knew that one day they would get the result they wanted.

“George was so pleased to be given a bottle of whisky by the community council as recognition for his work.

“It was never about him, but that meant so much to him.”

Jim Ronney, chair of the community council, said: “The efforts put in by George over the last seven years cannot be underestimated.

“It is a source of some comfort for us all that he achieved what he set out to do.

“There is no doubt he will be sadly missed from both the town and our community council.”

The funeral will take place on Tuesday, November 28 at Holmsford Bridge Crematorium in Dreghorn at 11am.

There will be a collection for Alzheimers Scotland and the family would welcome any donations.
