A real credit to herself

-

A Doon Academy pupil put in a sterling performance during a work experience placement at an Ayrshire-based credit union.

Tammi Grover, 15, a pupil in the Supportive Learning Centre ( SLC) at the East Ayrshire school spent a week shadowing employees from Sovereign Credit Union.

The Dalmellington teenager worked alongside staff member Jane McFadzean, visiting schools, making cash collections, helping to organise financial education lessons and completing vital financial paperwork.

Tammi was offered the work placement after impressing staff during visits made to the school to make cash collections. The visits aim to encourage pupils to become savers from an early age.

And she believes the work placement has been an invaluable experience.

Tammi said: “I’ve gained lots of skills and it has given me an insight into the world of work. I’m looking forward to leaving school and getting a job now.

“I’ve learned how to prepare lesson plans and work with primary school children and it has been a good experience. I’m really grateful I got the opportunity to show what I could do.”

Jane McFadzean, Junior Savers Development Officer, was full of praise for the Dalmellington teen.

She said: “Throughout the week Tammi has been professional and mature. She engaged with pupils and staff really well. She also helped to design and prep lessons for primary pupils, one of which will now be rolled out across our other schools.

Cumnock- based Sovereign Credit Union works with seven schools across East Ayrshire and the Isle of Arran through its Junior Savers Project, which is funded by the Scottish Government.

The not- for- profit organisation offers saving plans for both youngsters and adults.
