Growler gets the green light

New bar is set to join Ayr’s renaissance bid

Another new bar has been given the green light to join Ayr town centre’s comeback scene.

Entrepreneur Kenny MacPherson is to open his latest venture on Beresford Terrace’s former RBS building.

The plot, vacant for more than eight years, will be “predominantly food- led,” and called The Growler, said Mr MacPherson.

Gaining his official paperwork from South Ayrshire licensing chiefs, he said: “We bought the former RBS eight years ago and initially looked to lease.

“The upstairs are offices and it has taken some time to get any interest.

“So we’re deciding to open with an extension to what we currently do, which means we’ll be predominantly food- led.

“It will be similar to what we’re doing along the road at the Meridian and the Ayrshire and Galloway.”

Licensing panel member, Councillor Bob Pollock, asked: “How will the external area be monitored?”

Mr MacPherson replied: “We’ll have a waiting station which will be manned and an extensive CCTV system throughout the building.”

We told last month how the trendy new venue, which will boast a large garden, is to specialise in a variety of world beers on tap.

It will join a string of new openings in the town, which is bidding to launch a fightback against neighbouring Prestwick’s red hot night scene.

The Arthur Street Kitchen and new- look Tree House were the latest to open their doors to the public this week.

They follow the likes of The Newmarket, Brooklyn Cafe and Cameron’s Bar in injecting fresh life into the town.
