New nail bar project opens at Queen Margaret Academy
Schoolkids are saying BLING it on – with the opening of a new nail bar in their ranks, writes Stuart Wilson.
The ‘ Palm Tree Salon’ will bid to teach pupils at Ayr’s Queen Margaret Academy practical skills, build their confidence and aid communication.
Funding of £ 5080 has been invested by the Prince’s Trust and Developing Young Workforce Ayrshire ( DYW).
Money will also be used to set up a bike repair hub and a rural and horticultural skills course at the school.
Head teacher, Tony Flynn, said: “There is a sense of excitement about the school with young people, staff and partners ready to work together to make the Palm Tree Salon a success.
“The nail bar will make a big impression as we prepare youngsters for the jobs market.
“Communication and team building skills are transferrable so there is much to be learned even for those that don’t go on to have a career as a nail technician.”
Claire Baird, DYW Ayrshire Project Executive, added: “We believe that the Palm Tree Salon project will significantly assist in the development of employability skills known as soft skills in the young people taking part in this project with a particular emphasis on customer service and care skills.”
Council chiefs hope the scheme will encourage future employers to cast their eye towards potential staff.
Walter Smith, Prince’s Trust Ayrshire chair, said: “There is a strong need to develop confidence in our young people and give them the ability to interact with adults in preparation for joining the workforce.
“We are extremely confident that the Palm Tree Salon will deliver this confidence and help prepare the young people for the world of work. It is great to get funding support from the Cash Back for Communities programme.”
Similar schemes are set to be rolled out in Kyle Academy, Girvan Academy and Carrick Academy, with Ayr Academy, Marr College and Belmont Academy due to have initiatives in place over the next few months.
