New fears over college campus
Acrumbling college faces £ 1.8 million of urgent repairs to keep it safe.
the Riverside campus of ayr College, built in 1966, is suffering“very high- risk” damage.
Consultants called in to probe the building warn remedial work should be carried out “immediately or within one year”.
structural concerns are “at risk of imminent and unpredictable failures,” according to a survey commissioned for the scottish Funding Council. College chiefs have been warned that lack of action runs the risk of “partial or whole closure of facilities”.
property consultants, gardiner and theobald, named ayr’s ageing building as the scottish campus facing the biggest priority repair bill.
Wider figures showed more than £ 360million is needed just to make the country’s college estate wind and water tight.
ayr Msp John scott said: “this appears to be a significant amount of money that requires to be spent.
“I am, however, optimistic this money will be found through either internal resources at ayrshire College or the scottish government.”
He added: “But it is of paramount importance that this building is maintained.”
ayrshire College failed to respond to a request for comment before the post went to press.
