Everest trek to base camp was in brother’s memory

Duo took on challenge of raising charity cash

A once in a lifetime challenge sees two Ayrshire men triumph at Everest Base Camp in memory of their brother and friend.

The pair of adventurers from Cumnock successfully trekked across the Himalayas raising over £ 4200 for Motor Neurone Disease ( MND) Scotland.

Michael Kelso, 63, self- employed in the building trade, was joined by close friend Garry Robertson, 57, of Prestwick aviation company GE Caledonian, on the three- week trek to raise awareness and funds for the charity.

MND is a rapidly progressing terminal illness, which stops signals from the brain reaching the muscles.

This may cause someone to lose the ability to walk, talk, eat, drink or breathe unaided.

The duo decided to take on the world’s highest mountain after Michael lost his brother, Alan, to MND in 2015.

Alan had a passion for hiking, with a proven track- record of tackling peaks in China, Pakistan, Russia, Switzerland and Scotland.

Following his tragic death, Michael and Garry resolved to take on the infamous Everest Base Camp route, in Nepal, in his memory.

“We took on this challenge to raise vitally needed funds for MND Scotland and to increase awareness of Motor Neurone Disease,” Garry said.

“It was a very tough but immensely rewarding trek in the Himalayas and along the way we were privileged to witness some amazing sights.”
