Top award for butchers

- Abi Smillie

A family butcher started the new year in their prime.

Cumnock’s Prime Cuts scooped silver in the Scottish Craft Butchers Savoury Pastry Products Awards.

The popular Townhead Street butcher secured a Silver Award for their traditional bridies.

The shop is the latest to be launched of the four Prime Cuts branches across Ayrshire, opening in April last year.

Delighted shop manager Michael Cunningham said it would spur on his small team of three to enter more in the future.

He said: “Aw we’re really chuffed.

“It’s a good thing for the shop as we’ve not even been open a year yet.

“I think anything you get at anytime is good but hopefully this will boost the business and boost sales.”

“We just entered the bridie category for starters but we’ll aim a little higher next time.

Douglas Scott, Chief Executive of Scottish Craft Butchers, said this year’s Savoury Pastry evaluation has seen a record number of entrants, reflecting the importance of independent butchers’ products.

“Awards are not given out lightly,” said Douglas.

“Every one of the butchers recognised can be rightly proud of their products.

“These awards show customers just what a high standard their local butcher sets.”

The other three Prime Cuts can be found in Ayr, Mauchline and Coylton.
