Voice of Reason

-

Wake me up and tell me it’s all a dream.

Are we really sitting on the edge of the biggest implosion known to mankind?

Eight points ahead going into a festive game at Airdrie, all looked rosy in the Somerset Park garden.

Now three weeks down the line – and with a horror injury list – we’re suddenly playing catch up.

How can nine in a row winners who are only 15 goals short of a century, suddenly be on the edge?

As old Dunc Carmichael has frequently chronicled, this should be a season to tell the grandkids about for decades to come.

Instead, it’s in danger of resembling a horror movie.

Three defeats in the last four means Saturday’s game against Raith at Kirkcaldy will surely define our season.

Lose and we will be four points adrift with two games more played. Realistically, that could become a 10 point gap.

Which only reinforces my point that we can score all we want – you win nothing for that stat.

Fingers are being pointed at Jordan Hart who, at only 21, is still learning his trade.

But in truth, our problems go a lot deeper and have done for a long time.

Our midfield has been posted missing – quite literally – for the last couple of months.

Sooner or later, it was going to catch up on us.

People need a scapegoat and Hart has become that man.

I get it, keepers make high profile errors that can cost games.

But right now, our goalie needs a shot of confidence and he ain’t going to get it with flak flying from all quarters.

Unless we’re parachuting in David de Gea, Hart needs to stand tall, take it on the chin and emerge on the other side a better keeper.

Putting up the shutters in our biggest game of the season can see Ayr reclaim pole spot and leave Raith as the chasers.

Win there with a defiant performance and things would suddenly look a lot different again.

It’s our biggest 90 minutes of the season.

Now more than ever we need everyone on the road to create a special atmosphere and a big away day.

Let’s make it happen.
