Man ordered to stop growing marijuana

- Sarah Hilley

A blazing car was dumped on a golf course after a disaster drive.

The stolen BMW was abandoned on the 9th fairway of Dalmilling Golf course in Ayr last Monday ( February 19).

Firefighters extinguished the flames - leaving a burnt out shell.

North Ayr Community Councillor Wallace Kerr shared this picture of the damage, which shows the vehicle on the green being examined by police officers.

He said “The car was sitting on the ninth fairway. The owner reported it missing and claimed the keys had been left in the ignition all weekend.”

A Police Scotland spokesman said the BMW 320 was stolen from Ardlui Road in Newton on Ayr between 5.30pm on Sunday, February 18 and about 4am the next morning. A man has been warned to stop growing cannabis for pain relief or face jail.

Mark Meechan, 34, was busted by police for growing marijuana at his home in Muirkirk.

Officers uncovered 180 grammes of cannabis worth £ 1,000 and four plants valued at £ 1,500. Sheriff Desmond Leslie told Meechan he would end up in jail if he continued to self medicate with the illegal drug.

Meechan was tagged for three months at Ayr Sheriff Court last week after the court heard how police discovered his £ 2,500 drug stash.

Procurator Fiscal Catherine White said officers raided Meechan’s home last year to uncover the cannabis cultivation on August 11.

The fiscal police officers used a search warrant to gain entry. She told the court how Meechan told them the weed was for “personal use.”

His defence lawyer Euan Cameron said his client takes cannabis to help him cope with “chronic pain.”

He said Meechan felt it “wasn’t safe” to buy cannabis from dealers and he suffered f rom anxiety and post traumatic stress.

Mr Cameron added: “He is a rather vulnerable individual. This is a serious crime.”

Sheriff Desmond Leslie told Meechan: “If you continue to self medicate the way you have done with a significant production - then ultimately you may find yourself in jail.”

Meechan, of Hareshaw Crescent, Muirkirk must remain indoors between 7pm to 7am. He must also undergo supervision in the community for 18 months. His sentence is an alternative to custody.
