It’s green for go

Come do some spadework at public garden

- Stuart Wilson

Green fingers now have no excuse to stay indoors thanks to a new community facility launched in Prestwick.

For the town has opened its very own public garden – and everyone is invited to do their bit of digging.

Overlooking the hustle and bustle of the Main Street lies the newly created base at Boydfield Gardens.

South Ayrshire Council has injected £ 4500 into the project, which will be overseen by the town’s North Community Council.

And volunteers of all ages are being sought.

Julie Twaddell, whose late sister, Laura, helped pioneer the idea, said: “It came about after the old toilets were demolished.

“There was nothing left behind and Laura was very keen to see something of this nature put in its place.

“It’s all about encouraging people to take pride in their civic space.

“Nobody needs to ask permission to help out in this garden – everyone is welcome and it will be a real community effort.”

Whether it’s children planting their own flowers or keen gardeners doing their bit to spruce up the town, a new look is assured.

Julie said: “We’re going to have children from Prestwick Academy down to do their own planting, which should be great.

“That all plays into the cultural change which this garden will hopefully help to achieve.

“We want people to be proud of their surroundings and help with their upkeep. If that means bringing your own plant down and getting involved yourself, then great.”
