WI’s tribute to their old friend
Alloway Scottish Women Institute remembers former member Betty Rowan.
A minute of silence opened the Alloway SWI meeting early this March to remember long- standing member Betty Rowan who had died recently.
Betty was great at baking, knitting, stitching, and paper craft.
She enjoyed competing at Rural and Flower Shows and she had her winning entry from The Burns Bicentenary Competition
hanging in The Tam O’ Shanter for a good number of years. Latterly Betty’s health prevented her from attending but many memories of her remain.
Members from neighbour Institutes attended the Guest Night, entertained by The Inverclyde
Waulking Group. The band, with female’s members only, took everyone on a musical journey
through the Western Isles back in the 1940s when women used to process wool.
It was a very entertaining night as the singers told stories behind each song.
At the end of the night, the competitions results were three oatcakes with Margaret McCreath
getting the first place and June Foreman the second.
A Tweed Item saw again
1st Margaret
McCreath, 2nd June Foreman 3rd Marjorie McCracken. Gina Struthers won Flower of the Month
with Marjorie McCracken second and Margaret McCreath third.
The speaker for the April meeting will be Ian Thompson and the subject is going to be ‘ On Her
Majesty’s Secret Service’. The meeting will be held at Alloway Village Wednesday, April 11, starting at 7.30pm.
