Parents warned after close shave

Kid almost knocked down near school

- Sarah Hilley

Parents have been urged not to park on a road near a school after a child was nearly knocked down. Motorists have been speeding and parking haphazardly at Doonfoot Primary during the school rush.

And the traffic chaos culminated in a car nearly colliding with a boy on Greenan Grove.

Alloway and Doonfoot Community Council heard about the problem at its latest meeting. The school has sent out warning letters telling drivers not to park in Greenan Grove after the near miss on February 27. Councillor Siobhian Brown said: “Parents were told there was a near miss and now one is to park there any more. I drove past and there were no cars there. Parents seem to be adhering to it. Most parents are responsible but sometimes they speed to get to school quickly. Doonfoot has very narrow streets, which is a problem. I urge parents to slow down, bike or walk to school if they can. Alternatively park further away if possible. It is important to take precautions.” The community council heard how there was also a problem with cars parking at a bus stop at Alloway Primary.

Chair Marilyn Dalgleish said there was also a speeding issue on Monumment Road and Greenfield Avenue. She asked police officers at the meeting if they were monitoring the roads.

Ms Dalgleish said: “You drive down the road look in the mirror and someone is on your tail.”

Police officer Tracey Tompkinson said: “Bad driving is often not dangerous or careless.”

She added: “The majority of our roads are not designed for the amount of traffic on them. Most households have two or three cars.”
