Let there be light for street in blackout

Power line problem now fixed by Scottish Power

- Abi Smillie

Residents were left in the dark after their street lights were out for four weeks.

Residents of Thorneyflat Road in Ayr hit out after they had no street lights, leaving a cul- de- sac in blackness after sunset.

Concerned neighbour Jim Dickie contacted the Post after his pleas had fallen on deaf ears.

The 55- year- old said: “It’s been like that for four weeks that the streets have been in darkness.

“It’s just a wee cul- de- sac but it’s pitch black and is a serious risk to the safety of the residents.

“Nothing seems to be getting done about it.

The sales manager at Digital Kitchens spoke of his struggle to get answers from the authorities.

He continued: “When I phoned the Roads Alliance, they said ‘ I’ll give you the number for Scottish Power to phone’ but I don’t want to phone them.

“I’m phoning the council because that’s who deals with it.

“I just feel that’s four weeks and we’re not getting anywhere.

“When I phoned a couple of weeks ago they said ‘ you’re not the first one to make the complaint’ and my concern is nobody has chased it up.

“Surely it shouldn’t take four weeks to get street lights back on?”

Ayr North councillors were informed and helped look into the issue.

Councillor Ian Davis said: “I finally received a response from ARA, and it seems as though it is due to a fault with a Scottish Power electrical cable.

“However, there is no excuse for it taking so long to fix.

“Hopefully, the article in the Ayrshire Post and discussions with the councillors to both ARA and Scottish Power will prevent this from happening again.”

Thanks to the Pos t ’ s intervention, Thorneyflat Road’s street lights hav now been restored.

A Scottish Power spokeswoman said: “We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

“It looks like there was a fault on one of our lines but work has been carried out and it is fixed.”
