End of the road for rogue roundabout

Traffic lights given the green light at junction

- Stephen Houston

A roundabout built more than three years ago is to be obliterated

The junction in Barassie is to be replaced with traffic lights.

And two more roundabouts planned to cope with increased volumes of cars will now be scrapped, it has been revealed.

Housing developers at the Earl’s Green estate are to pick up the bill for all the work.

The entrance roundabout on Kilmarnock Road was created in October 2014 and created huge traffic jams.

Even before it opened Troon Community Councillor Erica Williamson questioned how “muckle great wood lorries” would negotiate it.

She was proved right when it had to be reprofiled and Councillor Peter Convery branded it a “pig’s breakfast”.

Contractors then used fake stone which was quickly smashed by lorries.

And Troon Community Council blasted the shrubbery put on top of the roundabout as it blocked sight- lines.

Councillor Bob Pollock said: “This roundabout opposite Lang Road has been a thorn in our flesh for some time.

“We have now got agreement with the developers to put phased traffic lights in to replace the planned roundabouts. Lights would go at the top of Kilmarnock Road at Loans Road and another set on Loans Road towards Collennan, where the 600 new houses will be.

“The last phase would be to replace the existing roundabout at Lang Road with another set of traffic lights.”

The Councillor added: “They can be synchronised to take account of traffic going out in the morning or in at night.

“It is a more attractive proposition to do it now than it would have been.

“The cost will be met by the developers and what it will do is slow traffic down on both roads.”

The move was given the blessing of Troon Community Council and formal plans will be presented later.

Stewart Turner, head of the Ayrshire Roads Alliance, said: “Planning consent exists for the roundabout on the B746, next to the new housing developments.

“However, working with South Ayrshire Council’s portfolio holder, local elected members and the Troon Community Council, we’re exploring the possibility of changing the roundabout there to a three- way traffic light system.

“The developers, Stewart Milne and Taylor Wimpey, support the idea and have offered to pay for the system, to be introduced on a trial basis.

“If successful the traffic lights will become a permanent fixture.”
