Traffic concerns when diggers arrive on site

- Stuart Wilson

Construction work on a giant retirement complex is to begin this winter, developers have confirmed.

The seafront block, built by McCarthy & Stone, will house 69 independent living units on the site of the former Malcolm Sargent House.

First residents are expected through the door in spring 2020.

The announcement follows a long- running planning row which saw a raft of opposition to the design.

T h e L i n k s R o a d development will feature a restaurant and boast privately- owned one and two bedroom apartments.

Lorraine Paterson, of McCarthy and Stone, said: “We are committed to designing flexible homes which are sensitively designed to re f l e c t the character of the neighbourhood and to allow people to live their retirement years to the full – and as independently as possible.

“This latest addition to our prestigious coastal portfolio is expected to attract significant levels of interest from retirees in Prestwick and beyond who are interested in downsizing to a lower- maintenance property and who will be attracted by this sought- after seaside location.

“I would urge prospective purchasers to register their early interest to be among the first to be updated on progress as we transform this prime site.”

But concerns have been raised over the large- scale plot causing travel chaos when diggers finally roll up.

Prestwick councillor, Hugh Hunter, said: “It is all very well to provide a timetable for construction but what about the plans for traffic management, which is sure to prove a real issue?

“The public should be given their chance to have their say on that matter.”
