Lara is quids in after logo competition win
Design will be official crest of Girvan 350 celebrations
A schoolgirl has been counting the cash after winning a special competition.
Lara Owens, an S3 pupil at Girvan Academy, designed a logo which will be the official crest for the Girvan 350 celebrations.
Entries poured in from the academy, Girvan Primary, Sacred Heart and Invergarven.
And the Girvan 1668 committee picked a winner from each school, along with an overall winner.
The other finalists were Sol Mitchell, Shay Burns and Dakota McGarvie, who all bagged themselves £ 50.
But Lara’s winning entry gave her a whopping £ 100.
Describing her design, Lara said: “My design is all about celebrating 350 years of Girvan being a Royal burgh.
“It has elements of celebration round the sides and our beloved coat of arms bringing back the history, but also including a modern theme.”
Girvan Academy’s depute head Alex Scott said: “This is great news, and wonderful work from all the pupils who entered.
“The committee wanted a design for the logo to go on social media and all kinds of posters and banners. They wanted the schoolchildren involved, which is good.
“I am particularly proud of Lara as she is a pupil at my school, but all the pupils have done well.
“And to highlight the great work, all entries will be showcased at the McKechnie Institute.”
Reverend Ian McLachlan said: “There was a lot of discussion over the entries, and we were delighted with them all.
“A logo is important for marketing, and Lara’s entry was excellent.
“This is also the year of the young people, so I think it’s great that they all got an opportunity for this prestigious competition.
“I am privileged to work in all these great schools, as all the pupils are always so polite and hard- working.”
Councillor Ian Fitzsimmons said: “All of the entrants have done very well, it’s great for them all to get involved.
“This competition was for the full town.”
