Action plan is taking shape

- Gary Fanning

A meeting will take place on Saturday in Dalmellington as part of £ 20,000 project to revamp the area.

It will be held in the village’s Scout Hall on Main Street.

The event aims to flesh out potential projects for inclusion in the area’s action plan.

There is a £ 20,000 participatory budget to get priority projects off the ground.

It comes after there was a bumper turnout for the first meeting of Dalmellington’s Reclaiming Our Coalfields Communities initiative last month.

More than 60 people took part in the bid to boost local democracy, and lay the foundations for an Action Plan for the area.

The Coalfields Regeneration Trust and the Electoral Reform society have mjoined forces to run the programme.

Elaine Stewart, the Coalfield Regeneration Trust’s community engagement officer in Dalmellington, said: ” We were really pleased that so many people gave up their Saturday morning to get involved in planning the community’s future.”

The meeting discussed the issues facing Dalmellington, highlighting areas of concern, and identifying opportunities to make the town a better place to live, work and visit.

Willie Sullivan, the Electoral Reform Society’s Scottish Director said: “We would urge Ayrshire Councils and the Scottish Government to try out innovative ways of allowing local people to make their own decisions”.

Bob Young Scottish Trustee of the Coalfields Regeneration Trust said: “It is very encouraging to see our joint initiative with the Electoral Reform

Society catching the imagination of so many people in Dalmellington.

“It’s great for local democracy and it bodes well for a really relevant and effective Action Plan emerging from their input.”
