MP sets out bid to change benefits

-

An MP has published a bill to amend universal credit to protect vulnerable women and children.

Philippa Whitford is hoping the new law would introduce routine split payments.

Currently universal credit is only paid into one bank account per household and there are concerns this could keep women trapped in abusive relationships.

Supporting the launch last Wednesday were representatives of Women’s Aid, Women’s Budget Group, Scottish Women’s Aid, Child Poverty Action Group, Surviving Economic Abuse and the Women’s Equality Party.

Dr Whitford said “I am proud to publish my bill and to have received the support of so many charities who recognise the detrimental effect universal credit is having on so many individuals and families.

“I love my husband dearly but the notion my salary would be paid to him just shows how bizarre this policy is.

“Evidence shows that women who have no access to money are often unable to leave an abusive partner and it is shocking that women in the UK could be forced to choose between poverty and abuse because of Tory UK Government welfare policy.

“My bill would help right that wrong and end the terrible choices some women are forced to make because of this government’s insidious welfare policies.”
