Award for STEM student
A digital marketing apprentice has been named runner- up in a top award celebrating female students across Scotland.
Catriona Cook from Annbank was congratulated for her efforts at the Interconnect Student Award 2018, which promotes women in science, technology, engineering and maths ( STEM).
The 23- year- old Ayrshire College student was selected runner- up for her involvement in Ayrshire Connects - a network group for female STEM and construction students at the college.
Catriona helped to establish the group in order to provide women with greater opportunities within their industries.
The student said: “I’m over the moon to have had my work recognised with this award.
“Ayrshire Connects is continually growing and it’s really great to see girls and women in Ayrshire being inspired by each other and getting the conversation surrounding women in STEM going. “I love being part of the network and it’s something I hope continues to evolve in the future.”
Catriona organised a number of events for the group, including; a visit to the University of Glasgow to meet with their female engineering society – FemEng, a cheese, wine and chatter night and ‘ Girls With Grit’ - an event which took place during Mission Discovery Ayrshire 2017, featuring guest speakers Sarah Murray from NASA and Dr Philippa Whitford, MP for Central Ayrshire.
Shelagh McLachlan, Marketing and PR Manager at Ayrshire College, added: “I am very proud to see Catriona’s work recognised by Equate Scotland through their prestigious Interconnect Awards.
“She is doing great work in bringing together students at Ayrshire College and creating opportunities for them to connect with employers.”
