CHESS

The final round of the Ayrshire Individual Championship featured defending champion Elliot Frew against Peter Smith, leader by a half point. Early stages favoured Smith, Ayr Chess Club’s top player, while Frew was looking to escape what appeared an inevitable loss while all Smith needed to win was a draw.

Frew’s experience in tight situations began to show and, in the end, his comprehensive ability of the Rook saw off the more limited scope of Smith’s Bishop. Any exciting finale to the competition with Frew, from Kilmarnock, lifting the trophy with five points from six just ahead of Peter Smith at 4.5, who shared second with Billy Kelly ( Ardrossan) and Jamie Malkin ( Kilmarnock). Hosts Troon were adrift with best performances from Clive Baird and Phil Thomas but continue to be the best attended club, fielding three teams in the Ayrshire Leagues. Their club competitions are reaching the conclusive stages with holder Tommy Barrett in sight of the winning post at 4.5/ 5 with one game to play. He leads John Calder on 3.5/ 5. Phil Thomas, who has played only two rounds, could hold the key to the tournament. The Silver Championship is headed by David Ferguson at 4/ 5 but he can be caught by Frank Park 2/ 3 and the Bronze has the likelihood of play- offs.

Len Weir has booked his place in the final of the Coronelli Knockout Trophy but Phil Thomas and Tommy Barrett have a replay to decide who meets Clive Baird in the semi.

BRIDGE

It was sad that some Bronze ranked teams withdrew from Tourney Cup final – perhaps feeling they had no chance against the teams of Life Masters, Grand Masters and Internationals. Just one Bronze team took part – Fiona Braid, Gordon Cunningham, Valerie Wood and Fred Dean and they went on to win.

The next Improvers class is on Friday, March 30 at 1.30pm. Jim Tudor will hold a class on Declarer play – particularly the planning of the play of the hand. A little on bidding might also be thrown in. Ayrshire’s next heat of the Celtic simultaneous pairs is on Wednesday, April 11 at 7pm at the Bridge Centre. Enter www. ayrshirebridge. co. uk
