Aidan and Scott win tribute for Martin

- Grant Young

Fourteen brave souls gathered at Shewalton Woods in sub- zero conditions to take part in Ayrodynamic Tri Club’s annual Martin McMillan Memorial Race – a tribute to a former club member who died while training 17 years ago.

Each participant donated £ 5 to the British Heart Foundation, teams of two were drawn from the two pots. One person from each team headed out on a 1.5 mile run into a strong and freezing wind, before handing over to the pit partner, relay style.

The second part involved a 7 km off road cycle which included some dangerous frozen sections, but everyone managed to stay upright.

Aidan Mathieson and Scott Gourlay were the winners, with Aidan producing the fastest run of the day and Scott the quickest cyclist.

Second were Alan Hiddleston and David Auchie, while third was Lorna Todd and Colin Davidson. Timekeeper John Strawhorn then had to be prised off the spot he had been frozen to during the race!

The previous weekend, Stewart McKinstray and Robert Szmidt travelled to the Clyde & Forth Canal to take part in the ‘ Neptunes Steps’ event.

Participants wrap up in wetsuits, gloves and rubber socks before plunging into the icy waters of the canal lock, swimming 400 metres and then climbing up the lock side under a deluge of freezing water.

The winners get to repeat the process in the next round, while the unsuccessful racers try to thaw out. Both members claimed to have enjoyed this unique event.

Trina Mulhearon completed the Glasgow Aquathon in 55 minutes. Club coach Stewart Bailey also took part.

Several members were disappointed when the Hamilton Duathlon and the Clumber Duathlon in Nottingham were cancelled due to freezing weather.

The Ayr 3 Castles Duathlon takes place on Sunday, April 22. Entry is via Entry Central.
