McCall expects sizzling stars to be in demand this summer

- Mike Wilson

Ian McCall expects Ayr United’s free- scoring stars to be in big demand at the end of the season.

But the Somerset Park boss isn’t giving up hope that he can persuade some of his prized assets to stay.

Scotland’s top league scorer Lawrence Shankland is understandably turning heads after a goal- laden season.

And others are also getting rave reviews as hot Ayr set a fierce pace at the top of League One. McCall insists his total focus remains on winning the title and isn’t looking too far ahead.

He revealed: “I’ve a clear picture in my mind of what I would like to do but we’ve got to stay really focused.

“We have put ourselves in a good position but we have been there before and then had one or two little problems.

“As for Lawrence, we can only see at the end of the season. I think there will be a number of our players with other options but Ayr United is a great club so who knows.

“It will all depend on what league we are in. I think Robbie Crawford would have had a lot of options but he was out injured for three months so who knows about that one.

“Time will tell with all the players but we just really want to win the title.”

Ayr headed to Albion Rovers on Tuesday evening — their third successive away game — and then entertain bottom team Queen’s Park on Saturday.

McCall revealed: “I thought about rotating Robbie because he was out for a while but he was the fittest player on the pitch against Forfar.

“He is now almost pain free and is just a very fit boy. Having him and Andy Geggan out for three months was huge as they are very big players.”

Looking ahead to the visit of Gus MacPherson’s Spiders, McCall said: “We’ve beaten them three times but the two games at Hampden could easily have gone the other way.

“I think they are in a false position and had a really good result at the weekend. You never get an easy game against them.

“The boys do have memories of playing at home in the last game when the atmosphere was sensational.

“If we can repeat that type of atmosphere on Saturday then it really helps.

“We are on a decent wee mini run of form which is good going at this stage of the season. But we need to stay focused and keep it going.”
