Girvan salutes Father of RAF

Tributes on cenenary of foundation

- Abi Smillie

The 100th anniversary of the formation of the Royal Air Force was celebrated on Sunday.

The special event was marked at the grave of Lieutenant General Sir David Ferguson with a fly- past by a Cessna Seaplane.

Sir David was a Glasgow man referred to as the Father of the RAF, whose work led directly to the amalgamation of the Royal Flying Corps ( RFC) and the Royal Naval Air Force ( RNAS) to form the Royal Air Force ( RAF) on April 1, 1918.

Sir David died in 1921 and left instructions that his ashes be interred beside his son in Doune Cemetery in Girvan.

His son had died at the age of 21 during a flying accident at Turnberry.

The National Service ( RAF) Association arranged for three events to be carried out to mark the 100th anniversary, with two held in London and one in Girvan.

The laying of floral tributes were carried out by Peter Bledge of the National Service ( RAF) Association and Denis Reid of Girvan, who had organised the event on the association’s behalf.

Provost Helen Moonie of South Ayrshire Council laid a floral tribute from the council and Irene Climie then laid another on behalf of the Girvan Town Team.

Joining provost Moonie were councillors Alec Clark, Peter Henderson and Ian Fitzimmons.

Representatives of the Royal Air Force, deputy Lord Lieutenant John Dalrymple Hamilton and the British Legion were also present.
