Our street is a dirty mess

Long- suffering residents hit out

- Abi Smillie

A litter hotspot has been branded an “eyesore” by fed- up residents.

Homeowners on Mainholm Road are sick of taking matters into their own hands and say more must be done to find a solution to the problem.

Carol McKelvie and husband Stephen are growing weary of the views on their street.

Carol said: “We have had to look out and put up with these sights for years.

“I personally have to phone the cleansing department on a regular basis to get our litter collected or it would be worse.

“And I work full- time, why should I always have to chase it up?”

The mum- of- three has lived on Mainholm Road for 21 years and said the issue has been going on for a number of years.

The road backs on to Ayr racecourse and is a popular walking area. Carol said: “I phone and they come and clean it but then it just gets worse – they’re not keeping on top of it.

“I used to go walks down that way but now I just take the car and go to the beach because it’s just a mess.

“There’s litter and dog mess everywhere – it’s just an eyesore.

“I once saw a groundsman cutting OVER the litter on the grass – it’s just ridiculous.”

A South Ayrshire Council spokesman said: “While we collect a broad range of household and garden waste every week, it’s unacceptable to simply dump rubbish and expect others to pick up the cost.

“Anyone found to be deliberately breaking the law faces an £ 80 littering fixed penalty notice or a £ 200 penalty for fly- tipping.

“Anyone with a concern about littering should phone the council on 0300 123 0900 and ask to speak to the waste management team.”
