Pouring money down the drain
Anger over ‘ quick fix’ for potholes
An OAP who claims his street has the worst road surface in South Ayrshrie this week said patching the potholes was “a waste of money”.
The Post reported last month how Hugh Cowan contacted us to nominate West Sanquhar Road as one of the most crumbling roads in the local authority area.
Following our story, workers on behalf of Ayrshire Road Alliance turned up to patch the road surface.
Mr Cowan, 75, said: “By coincidence or not, Ayrshire Road Alliance turned up last Wednesday and Thursday and proceeded to patch the road again.
“More wasted money.
“A number of potholes were missed and now when driving along West Sanquhar Road, it’s like driving over corrugated iron.
“I contacted Councillor Douglas Campbell and asked him to test drive it. He told me he would ask Ayrshrie Road Alliance for information regarding their systems of work. I am still waiting.”
Stewart Turner, head of the Ayrshire Roads Alliance, said: “We spent two days working on West Sanquhar Road and prioritised road sections in most need of repair.
“Patching a road surface will always be a short- term measure and is not a perfect solution.”
Last week we reported how Councillor Ian Cavana demanded to know exactly how the £ 3million extra given to fix crumbling potholes is going to be spent.
Last month the council announced the additional funding for repairs as part of their budget for 2018- 19 following the Ayrshire Post launching a Pothole Patrol campaign.
The local road resurfacing programme for 2018/ 19 was agreed by South Ayrshire Council and Ayrshire Roads Alliance will now carry out those works.
A detailed report outlining the scope of work and permanent pothole repairs was supplied to all councillors and community councils on Friday, March 9, for comment by Friday March 23.
Mr Turner added: “As previously stated, South Ayrshire Council’s Leadership Panel will consider the local road resurfacing programme on Tuesday 24 April 2018.
“If approved, we will look to schedule resurfacing work on West Sanquhar Road, mindful of the programme of priority work we also have to take into account.”
