Blitz to beat street grime Joint approach by council

- Stephen Houston

East Ayrshire Council were this week leading the fight against litter and fly tipping.

A full metal jacket blitzing squad has given towns and villages a spring clean.

The outdoor services team from East Ayrshire joined forces with the community, vibrant communities, waste management services, community payback, the corporate enforcement unit and the r i s k management centre’s mobile CCTV unit to clean up litter and tackle environmental crime, including fly tipping.

Meanwhile the dirt still piles up in South Ayrshire, where the only response to the Ayrshire Post campaign for a clean- up has been a poster telling people to bin rubbish before the seagulls get it.

Each day in East Ayrshire the taskforce worked between 7.15am and 10am, power washing the streets of Cumnock.

They cleaned under bins and street furniture, removing cigarette ends and generally removing any grime and dirt.

Additiona l s t ree t sweepers were drafted in to help with the deep clean, mechanically sweeping the pavements.

At 10am the taskforce moved on to focus on various communities supported by Atrium Ho m e s i n c l u d i n g Mauchline, Patna and Dalrymple.

C o u n c i l l o r J im McMahon said: “There is no reason why our town centres can’t be pristine.

“Ev e r yone has a responsibility to take action when it comes to littering. The council can organise taskforces and the CEU can issue fixed penalty notices but we need our communities to take a zero tolerance approach to littering and for littering to become unacceptable.”
