How do you get a three- quarters of a ton of carpet into an hotel when it will not get in through the front door?

The answer could be seen on Wednesday on the forecourt of the 75- bedroom Ayr Station Hotel.

Mr J W Mitchell, managing director, hired a five- ton crane and bystanders saw the 30 ft by 36ft Templeton’s of Glasgow carpet hoisted 50 feet up the side of the hotel and through the lounge window where it was to be fitted.

Mr Mitchell said: “There’s not much change out of £ 1000 and is of higher quality.”

In the Outer House of the Court of Session on Tuesday, Lord Dewar was informed of the settlement of the action by Gavin Jack, Glebe View, Maybole, against the Carrick Provident Co- operative Society, Maybole for £ 750 damages.

This was for his pupil son John, 11 years, when while attending a sausage making machine on October 6, 1916, had his right hand so severely injured that part of it had to be amputated.

The defenders stated their manager was at fault for employing the boy as a mincer.

He received a payment of £ 100.
