2018 trophy winners at Ayrshire Festival
The Ayrshire Music Festival was marked by capacity audiences on all three sessions on Saturday for the orchestras, and on Monday evening for the bands.
Some of the primary choir classes had so many entries this year that they had to be split over several days.
About 2500 primary age children took part in choirs.
Speech classes took place in the Baptist Church Centre. Adjudicator, Brian Marjoriebanks, was superb, encouraging, and praising the young competitors from Newton, Dreghorn and Doonfoot Primaries, in their spirited and entertaining renditions of Burns and Scots verse. It’s hoped that in 2019 even more primaries will participate.
On the final night of the festival a full Council Chambers heard some fine singing and instrumental performances. Each competitor was already a winner in their own section and came together for a final competition against other section winners for the Premier Awards.
Adjudicator, Donald Finlayson, commented on the high standard of playing and singing, and how difficult it was to choose one winner. He also spoke about the very difficult challenges facing Instrumental and Vocal Instruction in schools.
The Prestwick Arts Guild Prize was won this year by Bellsbank Primary, in recognition of the splendid work being undertaken in this fantastic ground breaking project.
The Howard de Walden Silver Challenge Cup and Committee Prize for the overall best vocal performance were awarded to Katie Carmichael from Ayr and the Elizabeth McNair Trophy and James M Clark prize, for overall best instrumental performance were awarded to trombonist Joshua Parkhill from Ayr.
The two premier competitions of the festival brought to a close the hugely successful 93rd Ayrshire Music Festival and after a busy two weeks the committee is already planning for 2019. Margaret Parker Shield Ardgowan Primary
