Bike club get off to flying start

-

Ayr Roads/ Harry Fairbairn Cycling Club’s racing season got off to a fine start, with a win at Stirling on Easter Sunday.

Against the stunning background of the University, the ‘ Crit on the Campus’ has become a very popular event for early season roadmen and women. The Roads club has had some good successes here in recent times and this year was no exception, with Rory Webster taking the podium place in his category.

The one- hour race was held over a tight, technical and fast circuit, with little room for error.

A field of over 40 riders took part and the importance of being in the leading group is a must in such an event.

Rory worked hard to ensure that he was in the right place at the right time for the inevitable sprint finish.

One of the strongest riders on the day, he did not disappoint and launched himself for the line in a hard- fought bunch sprint to take his first win of the season.

Rory was accompanied by Fraser Campbell, Iain Fisher and Robert Kelly.

The Criterium, promoted by Stirling Bike

Club, also featured Round One of Scottish Cyclin’s Youth Series, with 11- year- old Alloway school boy Ollie Kelly putting up a another excellent performance by breaking away with the youth race winner, Joseph Cosgrove, to take second place.

The Roads club were also out in force at the weekend with a fair group of members taking to North Ayrshire roads by way of Tarbolton, Galston and Stewarton before reurning via Irvine.

The midweek group clocked up a nice 50 mile run by Mauchline, Sorn and Cronberry before heading homewards.

On Thursday, the first of the evening 10 Mile Time Trials will take place on the Loans Course, which also sees a new criteria for the evening 10 Championship.
