Ayr seconds slip up in promotion hunt

Low point for the Beers last game

- Lochlin Highet

The penultimate league game for the men’s seconds and three points would have surely seen Ayr gaining promotion.

It was both a sad and special day as it was also the last game of the Beers family, soon to leave for America.

They were all available to help strengthen the team; dad Gavin and sons Isaac, Caleb, Nat and Ben for the fixture away to Giffnock on a cold wet day.

But despite the hard efforts, Giffnock ran out 3- 2 winners.

The team knew they had to make positive passes to play around the experienced defence of Giffnock.

Ayr kept possession for much of the first half with penalty corners being struck well, but all found their keeper - and other shots ran wide preventing the away side from from scoring.

One of the few attacks by Giffnock was expertly deflected in, putting the opposition in the lead at half- time.

The second- half started well with Gavin Beers hitting home a penalty corner.

But the Giffnock response was swift and they gained a further two goals.

Isaac Beers kept the game alive by a smart flick home.

Yet it was not to be, the game wasn’t long enough for Ayr, and they stood defeated with the prospects of a weaker team needing to beat Dumfries on the April 21.

A sad farewell to the Beers family who have supported the club well over the years, all the best to them and their new adventures.

Ayr remain a point ahead of both Giffnock and Hillhead going in to the final two games.
