Food store is given minor tikka- ing off

Grocer is caught out by health snoops

- Stephen Houston

A store has been warned to get its act together or face more action.

The Beechgrove Stores could face a criminal prosecution if it continues to have issues with its staff toilet.

Inspectors had already warned the grocery in Craigie, Ayr, about keeping pre- packed foods inside the loo.

And when they visited earlier this month they were told again to get them moved.

Returning four days later they found all the food had been shifted . . . but were still breaching rules as the the loo door was lying open to the food preparation area.

A South Ayrshire food officer has now told them: “A Hygiene Improvement Notice has now been served regarding this matter.

“Failure to comply will lead to a report being submitted to the Procurator Fiscal recommending legal action be taken against you.”

Staff handling food were also not being instructed or were trained in food hygiene.

Plastic covers to the bain marie were broken and the casing with dirty.

Staff were washing hands in the washing up sinks rather than the specific basin.

And they were drying themselves with a dirty towel.

The inspector noted a build up of paper and cardboard in the kitchen.

Part of the inside of both microwave ovens were dirty, as were the outside of a fridge.

Fabric mats in the kitchen were also “visibly dirty” and have now been thrown out.

Other problem areas included grease on wall cupboards and dirty shelving.

There was also no information regarding allergies or intolerances for any bakery items.

A pack of Chicken Tikka which had gone out of use- by date the previous day was also removed.

The manager of the store, who wished not to be named, said: “The thing we failed on was more a technicality of the hinge of the self- closing door so we’ve got that fixed now.

“The rest was just small items so once that’s done we should pass it again.

“We do have separate basins for washing up in place but I can’t answer for staff, but there is separate facilities there with soap and towels.”

Health and safety inspectors are due back in next week.
