WiFi dream nearer reality

Effort to get 802Works on board

- Stuart Wilson

Prestwick’s bid to become a WiFi town has moved one step closer.

The digital transformation could offer “connectivity to tourists, visitors, local businesses and residents”.

Community chief, Norrie Smith, is driving the plan to bring network specialist 802Works on board.

And turning the Main Street into a technology super highway is the dream of those looking to put the town on the nationwide map.

Norrie said: “This is all about making smarter use of our public space.

“It is evolution – a natural step to what we’re already doing.

“Technology is a great and very effective way of bringing people together and that’s what we’re hoping this will achieve.”

The development of a dedicated Prestwick app is among ideas in the pipeline, should the scheme become a reality.

Funding of more than £ 10,000 will be required to secure the project.

Similar schemes are already up and running in towns like Mingavie and at Hamilton Racecourse.

Norrie, chair of the town’s Prom Committee, revealed: “The aim is to have people arriving in the town and hooking up to their very own WiFi signal.

“We would also tap into things like a Prestwick website which could promote the town.

“There is so much going on here that we need to shout about and this kind of technology is the next logical step.

“It would operate on what’s called a Community Innovation Platform and is something for everyone to be invested in.

“The feedback and response has been positive so far so hopefully we can make this a reality.”
