Open talk on terminal care
End of life medical treatment is always the most difficult of subjects.
That’s why a group of experts gathered at Dumfries House to improve the palliative offering in Ayrshire.
Hosted by East Ayrshire Health and Social Care Partnership, Health Improvement Scotland and Ayrshire Hospice, the event focussed on the best way to support the dying.
Presentations from local GP Colette Scanlon, community nursing staff and Glebe Care Home in Dalmellington focused on how a flexible approach to working together can make a real difference.
Jean Davies from NHS Ayrshire and Arran gave a moving presentation on Palliative Care – Getting it Right for Babies, Children and Young People. This highlighted the compassion and dedication of the small team of staff who provide support to children and their families.
Robert McCulloch from East Ayrshire Council concluded the event with a presentation on funeral services and the Council’s innovative Respectful Funeral Service.
Health director Eddie Fraser said: “Supporting people to have honest and open conversations about where and how they would like their care provided is the most important part of delivering end of life care.
“We will be listening to people and will focus on what really matters to each individual.”
