Men more likely to pass their road test

Half of drivers pass first time

More women failed their driving test than men, new figures reveal.

A total of 55 per cent of men were successful, compared to 48 per cent of women in 2017- 2018.

During this period 1542 out of 2804 passed their driving test.

Although more women passed their test than men, the number who failed was also higher.

Women passed 1645 times out of 3425 tests, meaning 52 per cent of women failed.

A total of 900 tests were passed first time last year, 50 per cent of the 1821 that took place.

And 25 of those first tests were passed with zero faults, 18 coming from Irvine, three from Girvan and Cumnock and just one from Ayr.

Overall the pass rate of driving tests in Ayrshire has increased every year since 2014.

A total of 3178 people passed across the four county test centres between April 2017 and March 2018, which breaks down as 51 per cent of the 6229 tests conducted.

This has increased from 49.8 per cent in 2016/ 17, 46.7 per cent in 2015/ 16 and 46.6 per cent in 2014/ 15, and the equal five- year high came in 2013/ 14 which was also 51 per cent.

A total of 18,672 tests have been passed out of the 38,115 conducted since March 2013, an overall average of 49 per cent.

Irvine’s centre has conducted more than half of the county’s tests, with 20,039 tests being held there since 2013 and 8228 of them passed.

But almost two in three tests are passed in Girvan, which had 119 passes last year, which comes in at 62 per cent of the 192 tests taken.

Ayr has the lowest success rate, with only 43 per cent of the 11,935 tests since 2013 being passed.

Cumnock matches the Ayrshire trend as the pass rate has increased every year since 2014, with last year coming in at 53 per cent.

On average, the most likely month to pass is August. Sixty one per cent of tests were passed in this month over five years.

December has the highest risk of failure, with just 39 per cent of December tests being passed.
