New venture in curry title race

Regional finals for husband and wife

- Stephen Houston

A young husband and wife in their first food venture together have reached the regional finals of the Scottish Curry Awards.

Rajinder Kaur and Karamjeet Singh, both 29, are cooking up some incredibly tasty food at The Curry Leaf.

They’ve only been behind the stove and counter for ten months.

The Sikh couple were born in India, so the flavours are entirely authentic.

Since they opened in Wills Road near Ayr Racecourse they have built up a loyal following.

Karamjeet is the chef and Rajinder helps the customers.

Both sides of the family have had restaurants in Scotland and in India.

Rajinder said: “We have always been in the restaurant and food business.

“But we are thrilled that our first venture together is going so well.

“Ayr is a lovely town and we thought there is potential for what we do.”

So what is the secret of good Indian food?

Rajinder said: “I think it is bringing good Indian home cooking into a restaurant.

“Our menu is influenced by all our old family recipes.

“To win this title would be an amazing achievement in just ten months.”

Rajinder’s favourite dish is chicken tikka garlic butter masala and chef Karamjeet’s is South Indian garlic chilli chicken.

Karamjeet said: “I take pride in every curry dish I cook and hopefully that is showing through.”

The Curry Leaf is one of a clutch of takeaways vying for the South West Scotland award.

It has been tagged as a “Local Legend” within the Just Eat network.

They will head to the Crown Plaza in Glasgow on April 16 for the final.
