Spreading Fire across the world

- Lochlin Highet

From Ayr... to Australia... to America.

That’s the route that musician Jamie McGeechan, better known as Little Fire, will be taking this summer.

He is set to play the Camperdoon Burns Festival near Melbourne in May.

He will then head to the States for the Ohio Scottish Games to sing the American and Scottish national anthem.

Camperdoon was the first place in Australia to erect a statue of Robert Burns.

Jamie said: “I am playing there for the first time, and I am looking forward to it.

“It’s fantastic going abroad and seeing the passion people have for our culture.

“It’s strange, because I always think about the way we market Ayrshire.

“There’s not enough innovation there and I wish there was more of a global perspective when marketing Ayrshire with the view to attract more tourists.

“We have got so much to offer, as it’s an awesome place.

“I love doing the Burns stuff, and I was the first person to record an EP in the Alloway cottage.

“I am also going to be doing a talk when I’m there about the development of Scottish music through generations.

“That will be a great opportunity for me.

“I have also got some gigs in Sydney during my time in Australia.”

Jamie finds it hard to define his style of music.

He said: “Genre is a really hard thing to pin down.

“I guess I am an acoustic singer/ song- writer, but I have performed with the likes of Damien Rice and Dougie MacLean.

“I am also out performing all the time at functions, pubs and fancy venues - music takes me everywhere.”

Jamie is also an ambassador for World Peace Tartan.

He will take his fight down under and across the water.

He said: “It’s a charity who aim to raise money for good causes through the sale of tartan.

“The guy in charge works with peace leaders and other ambassadors.

“So we try and promote peace with the power of tartan, and I’ll be hoping to do that when I’m away.”

Closer to home, Jamie will be playing at the West Coast Fest in Troon this weekend.

The event kicks off at noon on Saturday, April 14.

I wish there was more of a global perspective
