UNITED NEED TITLE HELP

Alloa dent title dream but McCall vows to lift Ayr for season finale

Alloa defeat dents hopes

Shell- shocked Ian McCall admits Ayr’s defeat at Alloa left him at his lowest point in football.

But the shattered boss insists he will lift his players off the canvas as they pray for a last- day title favour from the Wasps.

United, who stood on the verge of the trophy a fortnight ago, have lost a five point lead after two successive defeats.

Sunday’s 2- 1 reverse in front of the BBC Alba cameras now leaves Ayr needing Raith to fluff their lines on the final day.

McCall said: “I got 30 minutes’ sleep on Sunday night and it’s the lowest I’ve ever felt in the game.

“We’ve worked so hard this season to get things back in our own hands and, ultimately, that is no longer the case.

“We had the golden chance we wanted with the penalty.

“Had we scored that, I think we’d have gone on to win as we were playing so well at that stage.

“I was unbelievably proud of our fans, who were just immense.

“Now we need them to turn out on Saturday as, who knows, there could be another twist left with the way this season has gone.”

Ayr will cut prices to £ 10 and £ 5 in a bid to raise a bumper crowd for the final league fixture.

Ironically, they could lift the title without winning — if they get a point and Raith lose.

But injury- ravaged United will be forced to go without six first- teamers as they welcome relegation- threatened Albion Rovers to Somerset.

Andy Geggan, who limped off at halftime against Alloa with a recurrence of his calf problem, has become the latest name added to the growing injury list.

McCall said: “We did everything possible to get Andy playing on Sunday as he is huge for us.

“Coming on the back of Craig Reid’s injury, it leaves us incredibly short at the back.

“But we have to stay positive and we know Alloa are a very professional bunch of boys.

“As they showed against us, they are more than capable of getting something at Raith, so this isn’t over.

“All we can do is go and win our game. The players will be lifted this week and be more than up for it.

“And if we ultimately have to lift them again for the play- offs as well, then we will.

“But after everything we’ve done this season, it’s not how we want to go up.”
