Store giants to create 35 jobs

- Stuart Wilson

A discount retail giant is to create 35 new jobs in Prestwick.

B& M will revive the former Co- Op store in the town’s Main Street when opening its doors on Wednesday, May 23.

It adds to the company’s branch at Heathfield Retail Park which opened last year.

The firm, which operates more than 570 UK stores, specialises in branded goods including toys, food and drink and homewares.

A B& M spokesman said: “We’re feeling really positive about the creation of even more jobs for local people and we hope customers are going to be delighted with their new store.

“We are all really excited to get the doors open and welcome our new customers through the door in a few weeks.”

The prime site on Prestwick Main Street has lain dormant since the departure of supermarket chain, Budgens, last year.

Jim Ronney, chair of Prestwick North Community Council, said: “This is a huge boost for the town.

“Not only are we seeing some much needed employment, it will bring an empty building back into use.

“The Co- Op was a very popular shop, but things never worked out the same for Budgens.

“Judging by the success of B& M at Heathfield, I’m sure they will enjoy similar trade here.”

Landscaping work is also underway on the rutted car park to the rear of the store, which has become a no- go zone for drivers avoiding giant potholes.
