Man terrorised by brutal thugs

Victim jumped on side of taxi to escape

- Sarah Hilley

Two thugs who beat a victim until he escaped by jumping on to the side of a moving taxi were spared jail.

Frazer Andrew, 21, and Neil Russell, 18, “terrorised” the young man by battering him and forcing him to drive his car around Ayr.

Their terrified victim managed to escape by hopping on to the side step of a moving taxi before taking refuge in the Tam O’ Shanter petrol station.

Sheriff Desmond Leslie told Russell and Flynn they were on the “cusp of jail.”

He said “You terrorised this man. You were originally charged with abduction.

“This was a friend of yours. You repeatedly assaulted him in his car to the point where he endangered himself by jumping on a taxi to try and get away from you. He then ran into a petrol station screaming for help.

And one of your concerns was that you had left your baseball cap in his car and could you have it back.

“You are fortunate this man wasn’t seriously injured.”

The young man had turned up at Fury’s nightclub to give pal Russell a lift. But Andrew hopped into his car and forced him to steer around the town on July 9 last year.

Later Andrew punched and headbutted him while Russell aimed blows at him through the car window.

Andrew tried to get him to pull into Morrison’s carpark but he refused and made his getaway from the motor.

Gillies, defending, Andrew said his client became incensed with the man for sending “inappropriate” photos of a woman pal to other men.

Mr Gillies said: “Mr Andrew came upon him. He accepts he lost his temper.”

The solicitor added: “He is extremely upset by his behaviour on that particular evening. He not only let himself down but his family down.”

The court heard Russell had mental health difficulties and was “extremely remorseful” about his actions.

Andrew, of Ewenfield Place, Ayr was fined £1,500.

Russell, 18, of Ardlochan Terrace, Maidens, was ordered to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work and undergo 18 months supervision.
