Tanked up driver in roundabout crash

- Sarah Hilley

A drunk DJ who was more than eight times over the limit crashed into the back of a motor home on a busy Ayr roundabout.

The camper van had stopped at Whitletts roundabout traffic lights when Donald Haughey, 43, ran into the back of it.

Sheriff Desmond Leslie described his stupored state as “extraordinary.”

The sozzled motorist was caught red handed when police turned up at the scene on March 28 at 7pm after the collision.

Haughey, of Birch Terrace, Girvan admitted drink driving at Ayr Sheriff Court last week.

Depute fiscal Hayley Robertson said his motor collided slightly with the rear of the campervan.

Ms Roberston said:“Officers attended the scene. On speaking with the accused officers noticed his eyes were glazed and detected a strong smell of alcohol.”

And he immediately confessed when they asked who the driver was, blurting out:“It was me.”

Haughey was arrested and a test revealed he had 180 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The limit is 22 microgrammes.

Defending Stephen Maxwell said:“It was a lot of drink and he knows that. It was a danger and he knows that.”

Sheriff Desmond Leslie said: “This is an extraordinary level of intoxication.

“That in itself would justify me sending you to prison.

“Fortunately what happened here was a minor collision. The consequences given your level of intoxication could have been more serious in which case you would be in the High Court.”

Haughey was disqualified for four years. He was also ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work and sentenced to 18 months supervision.
