The 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War is being commemorated by school pupils who have been shortlisted in a prestigious competition.

P7s at Wellington School in Ayr are amongst six schools across the country to be in with a chance at winning Poppyscotland’s design competition.

‘Poppy Places and Spaces’called on Scottish schools to explore the power of design as part of remembrance and reflection.

Divided into two age groups – P4-P7 and S1-S3 - the competition is now open to the public to decide the overall winner.

Wellington School’s idea to create a large, 7ft-tall Perspex box which would contain poppy made of thousands of poppy pieces.

This would represent the millions who gave their lives in the Great War and it would be located at the Low Green, in Ayr.

Commenting on their entry, the pupils decided to do so through a trio of short poems:

“Taking Part in this competition; We were taught; About those who fought; And why poppies were bought; That’s why we designed; Our poppy spot.”

“It means a lot; To put in the thought; For our poppy spot.”

“Daily reminder of the sacrifice made; Proud of our structure; Proud of our soldiers.”

Now the youngsters are calling on you to view their entries and vote for your favourite.
