Give us cops on the beat Meeting told of‘rare thing’

- Gary Fanning

Residents are calling for more bobbies on the beat in Cumnock.

It comes in a police report to Cumnock Community Council that there were 18 crimes in the town last month.

At last week’s meeting held in the town’s Rothesay House, one community councillor said: “We keep bringing up that there is not enough police on the beat.

“There should be more police on the beat.

“It is rare thing seeing a police officer in Cumnock. It used to be that you would go up the street and you would see the police or them going about on their bikes or walking about. But it is rare thing now.

“We would like to see more police and we would like to see more community police on the streets.”

The officer present said the situation infuriates police as much as residents and would pass on concerns to senior colleagues.

Residents fear more crime as the nights get lighter.

Of the 18 crimes in the town last month, there was one house breakin, one attempted house break-in, three shoplifting offences and one attempted shoplifting – all at ASDA.

Other crimes included one theft of a car and two traffic offences, one of driving without a licence and one of driving without an MOT.

Five acts of vandalism were reported, one drug offence, one fraud offence and two breaches of the peace.

Constable said eight of the crimes had been detected and people reported to the fiscal.

He added enquiries were ongoing into the other 10 crimes.

The officer said the policing model in East Ayrshire is changing in the new few months.

There will be locality policing and should give more community police on the streets similar to the changes that have been introduced in North Ayrshire and will be implemented in South Ayrshire soon.

The residents said any crime was concerning and they appreciated the hard work that the police were doing in the area.
