Homebase is latest shop to exit

- Stuart Wilson

Ayr’s out-of-town shopping park faces three closures within six months.

Homebase has become the latest casualty at Heathfield, joining Carpetright and Maplin in bowing out this year.

In total, the park will lose 50,000sq feet of trading space when all three shops cease trading.

Up to 40 Homebase stores across the UK are to close following a review of the company’s business.

But park bosses insist their multimillion investment can ride the storm.

Alastair Dickie, development director at Ediston Properties, said: “The whole industry is facing up to a fragile retail market.

“But we are still confident in Heathfield or else we wouldn’t be here.

“We have already invested between five and ten million pounds – and will continue to invest in what we believe is Ayr’s key retail asset.”

The park has been revived since Ediston’s arrival in 2011 in a deal worth £31.8 million.

Giants such as M&S, DFS and Costa have all proved big draws.

But now the park faces its biggest test since its renaissance, with three key players set to bow out.

Mr Dickie said: “There is ongoing interest in the site from a number of retailers.

“And with the help of quick planning consents at the council, we can ensure any vacant units are filled.

“The park is looking fantastic following our investment and we have every confidence in its long term future.”
