Swim stars make a splash for medals

Four are crowned champion after pool meet

The stars of South Ayrshire Swim Team are celebratin­g a 17 medal haul from this year’s Scottish National Age Group Championsh­ips.

And a fantastic four were crowned champion.

The members, aged between 13 and 18, competed in 107 events recording 75 personal best times while making 53 finals.

Katie Robertson, 17, started the meet with a bronze medal in the 100 Freestyle and was once again dominant in the breaststro­ke events winning the 50, 100 and 200 by huge margins.

Katie has not seen defeat at the age group championsh­ips on any breaststro­ke event since the age of 12.

Oscar Smillie upset the programme rankings as the eighth seed in the 50 butterfly clocked a best time to go third fastest in to the final.

The 16-year-old took gold by a mere one hundredth of a second and Smillie went on to grab bronze in the 50 free.

Lucy Grieve, 14, had a difficult start to the year through illness but the defending champion showed her class in the 100m butterfly to win gold.

At 13, Duncan Young was in the youngest age group at the championsh­ips but showed great maturity to record personal best times in every event where he competed.

And he excelled in the 50 freestyle final to land gold and become Scottish Champion.

He added silver in the 100 freestyle and another bronze in the 200.

Caitlin Duffy scooped a bronze in the 200m backstroke and a silver in the 100m back to continue South Ayrshire’s great run.

Hannah Young, 16, bagged impressive personal bests in the 50m and 100m fly, just missing out on medals in both.

Teammate Sophie Cameron showed an impressive return to form, equalling her best in the 200m back for fifth.

She also blasted her 50m backstroke for a 1.5 second personal best of 31.62secs and sixth place.

Calum Dunn, 14, was close to the podium after some huge improvemen­ts in the backstroke events.

John Houston in the 17/18 years and Matthew Gordon in the 15 years categories qualified for the one event each.

And both took their opportunit­y with personal best times.

John recorded 2:33.04 in the 200m breast and Matthew dropped an incredible 4.3 seconds in the 200m butterfly to finish tenth.

Lewis Hammond, 15, showed fantastic progress with finals for the 50m fly, 200m free and his best result on the last day in the 100m free.

In the same age group, Victoria McCormick finished eighth in the 200m backstroke in a very strong field while Sam Moore, 14, also made his goal of a final in the 50m freestyle and a 1.7sec personal best placed him tenth.

Dylan Cashmore (14), Amber Stevenson (13) and Keira Stericker (14) competed in six to seven events each over the week and had goals of making finals.

And all had finishes in the top 11-15.

Amber took an incredible two seconds off her entry time finishing eighth in the 100m breaststro­ke, while Dylan also took eighth place in the 100m freestyle with a superb best time of 1:04.33.

Keira knocked a second off her entry time with an impressive sixth place in the 100m breaststro­ke.

Fraser Collier finished 15th in the 17/18yrs 200m butterfly after a committed performanc­e while Beth Gordon in the same age group and event for the girls finished in 14th.

Ross Erentz, 15, hit both his goal times in the 100m and 200m breaststro­ke with personal bests.

Emily North’s best finish came in the 14yrs 100m breaststro­ke with a personal best of 1:23.30.

And David Rowan took over a second off in his 100m breaststro­ke for 13th place in the 17/18yrs.

Brooke Smillie at her first championsh­ips clocked a huge pb of 29.62sec in the 14yrs 50m freestyle for 24th spot.
