Jam for Jonsey gig is on as bands sign up

-

Last week, I proposed “Jam For Jonsey” - a fund-raiser to help cover the funeral costs of the late and great Tom Jones.

This week – I’m proud to confirm the event is ON!

It will be an all-day live session event at the Twa Dugs on bank holiday Sunday - May 27.

And every penny raised – from donations to bar profits – will go to the fund!

I’ve been overwhelmed by offers of help and support from inside and outside the music scene.

But the headline news this week is that The Rhymes – one of Ayr’s biggest bands of the 90’s and one of the first band’s to release on Tom’s “Power house” label – are to reform for a one-off tribute gig.

Keyboard player Shad Love told me “Tom was a huge influence and help to The Rhymes. In 1992, he funded the release of our CD “Slang”– and got us the support slot to The Blues Band.

We played with them at Ayr Gaiety, the SECC, Glasgow City Hall and Irvine Magnum.

“I could be wrong – but I’m convinced we were also the first band to play at his club, Jonesy’s.

“We haven’t played together since the 2009“Jam at the Dam”– but all the band are delighted to get together for this. Given our history with Tom, it seems fitting and respectful”.

Stand by for more band news – but also on the bill will be top local outfit The Usual Suspects.

“Jam for Jonsey” will run alongside a previously planned‘ Boat house Re-union ’party.

Tom was resident DJ at the popular Ayr harbour side pub for several years.

And there was some great news from Ian McCaig, organiser of Troon’s South Beach Sessions.

Chris Glen – formerly with the Sensational Alex Harvey Band – and The Outfit – are playing Troon Concert Hall a week on Saturday - May 12 – compered by rock DJ legend Tom Russell.

And Ian has confirmed that each ticket sold will include a donation to the Tom Jones fund!

Ian said: “Our Winterstorm concerts would never have started without The Piv, Powerhouse and the influence of Tom Jones.

“He led the way for live rock music in Ayrshire”.

I’ve also been asked how people can make cash donations to the fund. More details on that soon. Meanwhile, thank you for all your messages of support.
