Residents delight after appeal is withdrawn

- Gary Fanning

Campaigners have won their fight to stop a controversial digital advertising sign in ayr.

Applicants PosterPlus have withdrawn their appeal to the Scottish Government for the flashing signage in Whitletts Road. Now the council are set to remove it. Speaking at last week’s North Ayr Community Council meeting, Labour councillor Ian Cavana said’ “The sign in Whitletts Road will be going. “It is has taken a long time. “The applicant has withdrawn their appeal to the Scottish Government. “Enforcement will be ongoing. “Five years are up. It was horrendous as well. “The racecourse tried it as well and we refused them. “It wasn’t good for residents to have it blurring into their window. “It is going.” Dozens of residents objected to the plans. They were supported by MSP John Scott, who didn’t want to comment on the sign’s removal. One neighbour who lives in Whitletts Road complained it was on at all hours of the night. “It was okay when shut at 10pm,” they said. “Who approved that? “It was dangerous.” In January, the council ordered the removal of the flashing billboard after a bid to renew their planning consent was rejected amid safety concerns. The applicants appealed to the Scottish Government before withdrawing it at the end of last month. A council spokesman said this week: “We have received notification from the Scottish Government that the applicant has withdrawn their appeal and will now proceed with enforcement action in relation to the unauthorised signage on site.”
