A record 1118 runners completed the Troon 10K last Wednesday. The weather was excellent and the runners reached the finish on the prom in under one and a half hours. The race was very competitiv­e with Michael Deason of Shettlesto­n Harriers finishing with 32mins 15secs, followed by Kilmarnock Harrier Richard Mair on 32mins 19secs and David Millar, Irvine Harriers in a time of 32mins 50secs. Avril Mason of Shettlesto­n was first Lady home in 36mins 35secs. Local runner Laura Wallace of Ayr Seaforth finished second lady, 39mins 51secs. Troon Tortoises AC the organising club wish to thank all the Marshalls and volunteers who helped to make the race so successful and safe. Musical Remembranc­e Troon – a celebratio­n of favourite songs from the past. Come along to The Cabin on Wednesday May 16 at 1.30pm to 3pm. Enjoy singing, friendship and chat over refreshmen­ts. If you have always wanted to learn how to use a computer now is your chance. Free lessons with a tutor and in a small group are being held in the Marr Educationa­l Resource Centre, ( at the back of Troon Library) every Friday morning from 10am until 11.30am. Christian Aid Week is from Sunday May 13 to Friday May 18. Lunches will be served in Troon Old Parish Church Hall on Wednesday May16, Thursday May 17 and Friday May 18 from 11.30am until 1.30pm. Just £ 2 will buy tea or coffee and home baking; £ 3.50 soup, plain roll. Tea or coffee and home baking. A full lunch of soup, filled roll, tea or coffee and home baking will cost £ 5. Proceeds from Christian Aid Lunches and House to House collection­s will be donated to the Haiti Relief Project. Members of all churches in Troon and anyone with a yacht or boat or interested in sailing are invited to a Dedication Service for the Inshore Lifeboat at the Lifeboat Station on Saturday May 12 at 2pm. The Arts Society Ayrshire hold their next meeting on Monday May 14 at 1.30pm in the Walker Hall. The Mille Miglia: Cars and Culture. is the title of the presentati­on by Libby Horner. In 2014 Libby followed the legendary 1000 mile open road race endurance route. Doors open 1pm. A Garden Day will be held in Portland Church Hall on Saturday May 26. A good opportunit­y to buy bedding plants. Troon @ Ayrshire Family History Society meet on May 17 at Portland Church. The name Portland comes from the Dukedom of Portland which came into being in 1716. Troon Family History Society has Mr Hugh Watson coming to tell us about the Dukes of Portland and their place in our local history. As many of you will know Troon had a very special place in the advancemen­t of rail travel and this is due in no small part to the Dukes of Portland. The meeting starts at 7.30pm and the talk will be followed by tea/ coffee and biscuits. As always visitors will be very welcome, says Kathleen Taylor.
