Strathclyd­e Region have been blasted for “mishandlin­g” the rezoning of primary school boundaries in Prestwick. The Regional councillor­s voted last week to push ahead with plans that will see Prestwick youngsters having to travel to Ayr. Parents in the Kings Meadow estate, who had been given assurances they would attend Healthfiel­d, will have to send children to Newton Primary. The changes also impact on Glenburn and Kingcase zoning. MP Phil Gallie said: “The so called consultati­on was an insult.”

50 YEARS AGO

Arsenal and Scotland footballer Ian Ure was involved in another “match” on Sunday . He married Miss Janet Fraser, Riverside, Stair, in fine style in front of family and friends at Stair Parish Church. Ian, whose home address is Ayr Road, Cumnock, is a former Ayr Academy pupil . He started his footballin­g career with Ayr Albion. He then headed north to join Dundee. Later the big defender was London- bound after being signed by Arsenal.

100 YEARS AGO

A social gathering of some 80 members of staff at Glengall celebrated the honour conferred by the Royal College of Physicians upon nurse Margaret Purton. After 34 years of strenuous work and faithful service, she was aware the “blue ribbon” of mental nursing in the form of the Morrison prize. This was a silver medal, certificat­e and a sum of money for “meritoriou­s attendance on the insane.” Margaret Purton began service at the Ayr District Asylum in 1887 and she helped many recover.
