Potholes are untouched

Hugh hits out at repair job

- Gary Fanning

An OAP who claims his has the worst road surface in South Ayrshire says that there are 70 or 80 potholes still untouched in his street.

The Post reported in March how Hugh Cowan contacted us to nominate West Sanquhar Road as one of the most crumbling roads in the local authority area. Following our story, workers on behalf of Ayrshire Roads Alliance turned up to patch the road surface. Mr Cowan, 75, said again he felt forced to raise the pothole issue in West Sanquhar Road. “I still await the promised response from Councilor Douglas Campbell as to his enquiries with Ayrshire Road Alliance regarding my previous request,” he added. “After the Ayrshire Roads Alliance spending approximately a day and a half allegedly repairing the potholes in the road,. “I walked the road and counted between 70 and 80 potholes untouched. “I have asked councillor Campbell to investigate the cost to us. “This I feel is no longer just potholes but an abuse of our finances. “Someone from the council must take responsibility for the poor workmanship and the waste of public money. “They are very keen to spend £ 11 million on new offices for their personal comfort, but, not very keen on their constituents comfort and safety. “If this is the best we can expect then it is time I think for the people of South Ayrshire to reconsider who to vote for in the next election. A council spokesman said: “The council leader is dealing with Mr Cowan’s enquiry via colleagues in the Ayrshire Roads Alliance who are aware of the issues raised. “Councillors have agreed a record level of investment of almost £ 10 million in our roads network over the next year, but we know that potholes will continue to be an issue for people – like Mr Cowan – in communities across South Ayrshire. “That’s why ARA takes a risk- based approach and prioritises repair works according to the risk the individual pothole presents and its potential impact on road safety - this allows us to make the best possible use of the funding available for the maximum impact. “West Sanquhar Road, along with other roads, will continue to be monitored and assessed for consideration in the revenue repairs programme, subject to available resources.”
